Personally I have no issue with private education, but I do have an issue with public companies like Navitas (and the like) being "given" contract monopolies to provide university preparation courses.
In the case of Australia I have no recollection of tenders being advertised which Navitas won fairly, but was more about conflict of interest i.e. current and former employees setting up a private then public company using public resources.
As one of Navitas's marketing people said, university personnel complaints about use of public resources soon cease when offered a gig to work offshore at another centre :)
However, as international students numbers plummet in Australia, Navitas now has a serious competitor, i.e. ELS who are now in discussion with university partners.
